Searing, North Dakota

Saturday, March 19th, 2011

Every now and then our name pops up in unusual places.  Recently a listing appeared on eBay for a Last Day Cover, “Searing ND) (in a group of other such covers, with other place names).  I had never heard of this place before, although I had a couple of great aunts settle in the Dakotas.   Searched around a bit and found the following, courtesy of Roots Web data:  http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ndmckenz/S.html

Searing

This was a farm post office established July 25, 1916 with Thomas C. Taylor pm.  It was located in NW 1/4 Sec.10-147-103, Thirty-three miles SW of Watford City, and named for the site owner, Julius Searing Taylor, aftter Taylor had been rejected because of duplication in Stark County.  The post office closed March 15, 1921 with mail to Alexander.  It reopened February 7, 1922 in SE 1/4 Sec. 28-147-103, and seven miles SSE of the original site as Searing, but only after a name change to Dean had been rejected.  In 1928 it moved one mile NW to SE 1/4 Sec. 28-147-103, and operated until pm  Annie Kemna closed the facility September 30, 1952 with mail to  Sidney, MT.  A population of 3 was reported in 1940.

So now I’m really curious.  Anyone heard of this before?  Know who this Searing or Searing family is?  Looks like a nice little research project.

February Updates

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Time for a few last minute updates to squeeze into Feb.  First is an article by Daniel Searing, MD (not me, ha).  I would like to feature him in Notable Searings if I can find sufficient information.  Here is a link to at least a summary of his article:  http://bit.ly/fUOsl6.        Don’t forget to check #searing on Twitter if you are so minded.  I have tried to tag Searing contributions and retweet them with the hashtag as I find them and as appropriateWatch for an entry on the Searing Quartet, which I am still working on. Although not a ‘family’ business they were very open and friendly and in ‘all things Searing’ they deserve a mention.          Also, please check out the group My Name is Searing on Facebook and leave a mention!  Also, I take any and all suggestions and ideas!

The Humanity Bubble

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Posted today on Facebook by Michael Krenzer (Donna Searing Krenzer’s grandson) is a wonderful blog reference about how small our ‘broadcast bubble’ in the Milky Way is:    http://blog.jackadam.net/2011/the-tiny-humanity-bubble/        Great short post, great comments.  Astronomy and our place in the universe has always been an interest of mine, and it’s Searing related, so I wanted to share it.  But it also fits in another context.  The Searing (and relations) bubble is also small.  The family hasn’t (yet) multiplied into the 10’s of thousands other families have.  That makes ‘us’ easier to keep track of and to explore the past lives and present accomplishments of family members according to our time and interests.  I hope other Searing family members will point out things to post!!

Robert Searing, of Vestal, NY

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Another Searing obit has come to my attention.  There is more at:  http://bit.ly/dXep8U   “Robert Searing, 78, of Vestal, passed away on Sunday, January 23, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his wife, Ethel (the love of his life); his parents, Albert and Anna Searing; his brothers, Albert and William Searing; and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Searing.”       This upstate NY area is where some of my early paternal relatives came from, so this is very interesting.  If anyone knows more about the family history, or is interested in this families genealogy, please contact me.

Elsa Searing McGinn

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Just happened upon mention of Echoes of Other Days, by Elsa Searing McGinn and Howard Glyndon, who of course is Laura Redden Searing.  Ms Mcginn is her daughter.  The best reference to the book is: http://bit.ly/hEheYk     A Google Books reference.  It can also be found on eBay, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble, to mention just a few possible sources.  I know nothing about the book and would appreciate any information.  At some point I would also like some information on Ms. Mcginn, and will research her when time permits.

Marjory Searing

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

It is with great pleasure that I update the Notable Searing category.  I have been experimenting with seeking out new ‘candidates’ on the web, and Marjory Searing came up in a Google Alert.  She has had an amazing career that was well summarized for us by the Association of Women in International Trade (WIIT):  “Throughout her career, our speaker, Marjory Searing, has been a role model for women seeking to achieve success in the field of international trade.  The first female to have graduated from Georgetown University with a Ph.D in Economics, Searing went on to blaze trails for women at the Treasury and Commerce Departments beginning in the 1970s.  She directed the Commerce Office of Multilateral Affairs during the Uruguay Round of GATT negotiations, was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Japan during the height of US-Japan trade tensions in the 1990s, and led the US & Foreign Commercial Service, with over 3,000 employees worldwide, before leaving government for the private sector.  Most recently, Searing retired from Pfizer, Inc, where she headed that corporation’s international government affairs function.”    The link is:   http://www.giuffrida.org/wiit/events/current/69.html    This is such a distinguished career I would like to get Marjory to tell us more about her work.  Meanwhile I am happy to welcome her to our list.
